Cairns Theatres Enviromental Committee<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"240\" src=\"https:\/\/cairnsanaesthesia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/CTEC-LOGO-v1-1024x240.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-133\" style=\"width:554px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cairnsanaesthesia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/CTEC-LOGO-v1-1024x240.png 1024w, https:\/\/cairnsanaesthesia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/CTEC-LOGO-v1-300x70.png 300w, https:\/\/cairnsanaesthesia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/CTEC-LOGO-v1-768x180.png 768w, https:\/\/cairnsanaesthesia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/CTEC-LOGO-v1.png 1039w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">A multidisciplinary group of doctors, nurses, anaesthetic assistants, wardies and pharmacists working toward reducing the environmental burden of peri-operative care at Cairns Hospital and the Cairns and Hinterland Health Service<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Our achievements to date include:<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CTEC was the first enviromental committee to be established within Cairns Hospital<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Instituting the change from single use to reusable hovermatts for patient transfers<\/strong> <strong>reducing cost and waste<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Introduction of Pharmasmart sharps bins to comply with legislation and reduce enviromental contamination from drug disposal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Planning towards the establishment of a hospital wide clinical metal recycling waste stream<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Change to procurement choice of laparoscopic port type to reduce waste and cost<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Awareness campaign of excessive blanket use in the operating theatres and reduction of volume sent to laundry<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Awareness campaign to reduce the utilization of single use blueys and the alternatives available<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Review and changes to the content of operating theatres packs to remove items that are rarely needed<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Engagement with an external industry provider to remove and recycle our plastic waste<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Research and clarification to staff as to what we should and should not be sending to commingled recycling<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Regular auditing of our single use equipment and education to staff of suggested changes to practice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Change from sugarcane (not recyclable) single use kidney dishes to a recyclable cardboard<\/strong> <strong>option<\/strong> <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete removal of desflurane anaesthetic gas from clinical care at Cairns Hospital &amp; Hinterland Health Service<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Working towards decommissioning of the piped nitrous oxide system in Cairns Hospital<\/strong> <strong>to prevent leaks<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Campaigning for the employment of an environmental sustainability officer for the health service<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Partnering with industry to establish a PVC waste recycling stream for the health service<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CTEC &#8211;
